Jazz artists deeply connected to Plovdiv will present their program “Love Songs” — Miroslava Katsarova and Miroslav Turiyski, also known as “Mira & Miro”. They will be joined by a special guest artist, whose identity they are keeping secret for now. The program features songs from the jazz vocalist’s original repertoire, many of which revolve around themes of love. Alongside them, the artists have selected songs by Billie Holiday, Édith Piaf and Dalida, Joni Mitchell, Bebel Gilberto, and Sara Tavares — all remarkable women whose music has left a deep and lasting mark on contemporary love song lyricism.

Internationally acclaimed guitarist Jiannis Pavlidis (Dave Liebman, Ari Hoenig, Adam Nussbaum, Greg Hutchinson) and internationally renowned pianist Steve Hamilton (Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford, Freddie Hubbard, Gary Burton) join forces in a dynamic new quartet project with players extraordinaire, Alekos Spanidis (Sheila Jordan, Craig Bailey, Milcho Leviev, Diego Rivera) , and finally, local to Greece wizard bass player Dimitris Christonis completing a lineup that promises inspired performances, deep musical interplay, and creative energy at its finest. The group presents an exciting blend of original compositions and reimagined works, drawing from their rich histories of collaboration as well as from modern jazz innovators.

Balkan Surprise is a jazz quintet founded by five popular and well-loved musicians from Bulgaria and Greece. They share not only a deep love for jazz and diverse experience in this music of free expression, but also a strong interest in and profound respect for the authentic and rich musical heritage of the Balkans — that colorful, vibrant part of Europe from which all members of the band originate.
Balkan Surprise is a meeting of colleagues, neighbors, and friends, and the band’s music reveals the many layers of this connection. It is warm and sincere, beautiful and vivid, calm and dynamic.
Balkan Surprise creates and performs jazz that is contemporary and modern, harmonic and rhythmic, yet honest and unpretentious. Music that effortlessly touches the senses. While speaking the language of jazz, Balkan Surprise subtly pays tribute to the richness and diversity of Balkan sounds.
